Dear Parent / Guardian,

Children in Need

Ysgol Bryn Onnen looked incredibly colourful this morning with everyone in their pyjamas for Children in Need. We collected a total of £155. Thank you to everyone for participating.

Families can also contribute to Children in Need online;

Training Days in 2024

Ysgol Bryn Onnen will have 3 training days in the second half of the school year.

These will be on;

Monday January 8th

Tuesday January 9th

Monday April 8th

Curriculum for Wales

In our recent parent survey it was noted that parents aren’t familiar with the terms used in the new curriculum.

Progress steps

Schools aren’t split into Foundation Phase and Key Stage 2 anymore, or Infants and Juniors as some of us may remember form our own school days.

Primary schools now consist of 3 Progress Steps;

Progress step 1 – Nursery and Reception

Progress step 2 – Year 1,2 and 3

Progress step 3 – Year 4,5 and 6

When pupils move to secondary school Progress Step 4 will include Years 7-9.

Areas of Learning and Experience (AOLEs)

Subject areas are now split into 6 AOLEs

Numeracy – Maths and Numeracy

Literacy, language and communication – Welsh, English and foreign languages (for us and schools feeding Gwynllyw this will be Spanish)

Humanities – History, gGography and RE (in secondary school this will also include sociology)

Science and technology – Science and Design Technology. This will also include some aspects of computer science

Creative Arts – dance, art, textiles, drama

Health and wellbeing

All 6 AOLEs count equally and we work hard as a school to ensure our topics include a range of AOLEs.

Some topics may have more history than science, or more art than drama. But over the year we will ensure all classes get a balanced curriculum.

Currently when children finish Progress Step 4, GCSEs will be taught as separate subjects. This might change in the future.

Progression

Pupils aren’t awarded levels or grades at the end of school stages any more e.g. at the end of Year 2 and 6. Instead we are expected to show how much progress children make within a year and from year to year.

Free Childcare Offer

Working parents of children in Wales qualify for 30 hours of free childcare. Here are details of how this can be accessed.

To be eligible for the Offer, each parent must:

• Live in Wales

• Have a child aged 3 or 4 years old

• Earn less than £100,000 per year

• Be employed and earn at least, on average, the equivalent to working 16 hours a week at the National Minimum Wage or Living Wage

• Or be enrolled on either an undergraduate, postgraduate or further education course that is at least 10 weeks in length

Some parents have been having difficulty accessing Flying Start provision with some Nurseries.
